Flower Care 101: 3 Tips on How To Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer

As a family owned flower shop in London, we've had the privilege of being part of countless special moments with our customers. From weddings and anniversaries to birthdays, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Women's Day, Easter and Christmas, to name just a few! We have seen first hand the joy that fresh flowers can bring.

In this post, we'll share our top 3 tips to keep your blooms fresh for as long as possible.

Trim, Trim, Trim

1. Trim any leaves that will be below the waterline in the vase. This helps prevent bacterial growth and water contamination.

2. Trim the stem of each flower at 45 degree (i.e a slant cut). This helps the stem absorb more water, thereby keeping your flower fresh and healthy.

Feed Your Flowers

1. Use Cold Water: Cold water (35-50 degrees) slows bacterial growth, preserves nutrients and keeps the flowers hydrated longer than room temperature water.

2. Change the water every 2-3 days to maintain good water quality.

3. Add 1-2 tbsp of sugar per quart of water, 1-2 tbsp of fresh lemon juice or vinegar per quart of water (this helps to balance the pH of the water and prevent bacterial growth). You can also request floral preservative from your flower shop

Placement

1. Store your flowers in cool, dark places.

2. Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, heating vents, fruits & vegetables, and drafts.

3. Room temperature should be cool: 65-75 degrees.

Always remember, fresh flowers are a reminder to appreciate the simple things in life, to slow down and to enjoy the beauty around us.
